Fireworks cancelled over dry weather safety fears

Dry conditions have led to the cancellation of the North Show and Battle of Flowers fireworks display at Saumarez Park, organisers have said.

The Northern Agricultural & Horticultural Society confirmed the annual display would not go ahead this year after taking formal safety advice and carrying out a detailed assessment with its fireworks provider, Standard Fireworks.

The decision comes after an unusually dry spell in Guernsey.

In a statement, the society said: "Protecting the park, its wildlife, our exhibitors, and the thousands of visitors who attend the show is our foremost priority."

The society added: "While the fireworks are a much-loved tradition, conditions on site mean that proceeding would not meet the society's safety standards or our duty of care to the community."

All other Battle of Flowers and North Show events will go ahead as planned, with visitors still able to enjoy the programme of entertainment continuing into the evening.
