Motorists warned of 'disruptive' motorway closure
National HighwaysMotorists using the M4/M5 Almondsbury Interchange are advised to plan their journeys ahead as months of repair work begins later.
National Highways said the road would be fully closed from the M4 junction 20 westbound to the M5 junction 15 northbound from 22:00 BST until 06:00 on 6 December.
The agency said the closure was necessary to carry out work on lighting, camera installation, concrete repairs, waterproofing, the safety barrier, bridge joints, resurfacing, drainage, road markings and studs.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time to follow signposted diversions and National Highways acknowledged that the work would be "disruptive".
During the first phase of the work, traffic will be diverted via the M5 southbound junction 16, which is expected to be under "extra pressure" while the closure is in place.
National Highways said the M4 junction 22 would be busier than usual too.
The busy junction connects the M4 and M5 and the surrounding areas of Bristol, Aztec West, Cribbs Causeway and the Severn Bridges.
The permanent repairs come after temporary emergency fixes which were carried out at the junction in 2024.
PA MediaA spokesperson for the National Highways said: "Please consider avoiding the Almondsbury Interchange at peak times or use alternative transport where possible for long distance journeys while the work is underway.
"We understand this work will be disruptive and have planned out work to ensure the repairs are completed as quickly and safely as possible."
"We're grateful to people and businesses for their patience while this essential maintenance is carried out."
They added that the work would prevent future emergency closures.
