A father-of-five who died after a punch bag machine landed on him has been described as a "friend to many" and "a man with a heart of gold".

Abdo Ali, 52, died after a disturbance at a row of shops on Berkley Street, Toxteth, on 29 October, Merseyside Police said.

Officers were called following reports that a punch bag machine had been pushed over and had landed on a bystander.

Ali, who owned Shop and Save Mini Market in Everton, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital, where he died days later.

Paying tribute to him, Ali's family said he was a "loving father", a "friend to many" and a "man with a heart of gold".

The tribute continued: "He was more than just a shopkeeper, he was a familiar face, a friend and a source of laughter to so many in the community.

"His kindness, generosity and charitable nature touched countless lives, always willing to help anyone in need.

"He leaves behind an enduring mark on everyone who knew him, and his warmth, laughter and big heart will never be forgotten.

"A truly special man who was loved by many and will be missed by even more."
