A road is expected to be closed until next week after a large water main burst.

It happened on the A689 at Howden-le-Wear, near the Gulf petrol station, on Wednesday night, Northumbrian Water said.

The water firm said its team had quickly isolated the issue so that residents' water supplies were not affected. Repairs on the pipe were still taking place and the A689 between Bridgefield Court and Park Terrace is expected to be shut for at least the rest of the week.

Only residents of the Village Gate housing estate are currently being given access to that section of the road.
