People living in four streets who were given a boil water notice can now use their tap water as normal after water quality tests came back clear.

About 70 homes on Martin Close, Bullfinch Court, Magpie Lane and Chaffinch Way in Lee-on-Solent were told by Portsmouth Water to boil their water on Sunday after a routine test found bacteria in a sample taken from a fire hydrant.

It meant residents needed to boil their water before drinking it, brushing their teeth, washing dishes or giving it to pets while further tests were carried out.

The water firm said the tests had since come back "clear, with no E.coli or coliform bacteria detected, confirming there is no issue with the water supply."

The water firm said it believed the initial test that found bacteria from the fire hydrant in Martin Close was due to external contamination of the sample and not the water supply.

The water firm added the findings followed thorough testing of the hydrant along with others nearby, samples from customers' properties and its treatment works and service reservoirs which provide the water to the area.

It said: "Providing safe drinking water is our highest priority, and we would like to thank affected customers for their patience and understanding while we carried out these precautionary checks."
