A murder investigation has been launched after a woman died in a coastal town, police have said.

Police and paramedics were called to reports of a man creating a disturbance at a property on Newcomen Road, Dartmouth, at about 21:20 BST on Tuesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene with a man in his 40s taken to hospital having sustained facial injuries which are not believed to be life-changing.

A local man in his 30s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Devon and Cornwall Police added the suspect is a British national and he remains in police custody while inquiries continue.

Det Insp Guy Biggar from Devon and Cornwall Police Major Crime Investigation Team said: "We appreciate the concern this distressing incident may have caused with the local community but there is nothing to indicate a wider threat to the public.

"We would ask people not to speculate, particularly on social media, while we work to ascertain exactly what has happened.

"Our inquiries are at a very early stage, therefore it is too soon in the investigation to speculate on motivation.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends who have lost a loved-one in tragic circumstances, and we will continue to support them through this difficult time."

A scene guard remains in place while investigations continue and a significant police presence will be seen in the local area, the force added.
