Cemetery access limited over anti-social behaviour

Access to a cemetery in Leeds has been restricted after reports of anti-social behaviour in the grounds.

Leeds City Council said one of the gates at Yeadon Cemetery had been locked following incidents including public urination and littering.

Last year, police increased patrols near the site on Cemetery Road after reports of groups of vehicles waiting for long periods outside and intimidating behaviour towards passers by.

At the location, close to Leeds Bradford Airport, a sign attached to the cemetery gate reads: "Due to incidents of anti-social behaviour, and in order to preserve the peaceful and respectful atmosphere of the cemetery, this gate has been locked.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding and cooperation."

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: "We are aware of concerns raised about the use of Yeadon Cemetery by some visitors.

"As a temporary measure, one of the pedestrian access gates has been locked and we will monitor the impact of this over the coming months.

"The cemetery remains open and accessible through its main entrance."

People who had witnessed anti-social behaviour were encouraged to report it to West Yorkshire Police, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
