More than 9,500 runners will line up on Sunday for Peterborough's Great Eastern Run, with participants taking part in both the half marathon and 5km runs.

The organiser, Good Running Events, said more than 25 local charities stand to benefit from the event, with participants raising money for causes including children's brain tumour charity Anna's Hope, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and Little Miracles.

This year's proceedings will feature changes to the traditional routes because of construction work across Peterborough.

The half marathon is recognised as one of the UK's flattest races.

The Route

The 5km route, called the Anna's Hope 5K Fun Run, will begin at 09:00 BST.

Meanwhile, the Great Eastern Run half marathon gets under way at 10:30 BST, and both routes start and finish on Bishops Road.

This year's 13.1-mile (21km) route has been revised to accommodate ongoing development projects across the city, with a new section designed going through Priestgate past Peterborough Museum, and changes to parts of the course around Paston and Central Park.

The course is set entirely on hard ground.

Facilities

The event village opens at 08:00 BST and will include a baggage drop facility.

More than 200 toilets and urinals will be there, as well as additional toilets at each half marathon water station.

Meanwhile, medics and marshals will be stationed along the route.

The main spectator and meeting area is at the Embankment, next to the event village, with other designated viewing areas in Cathedral Square, Bridge Street and Bishops Road.

A British Sign Language interpreter will be on stage to sign announcements as runners complete the race.

Road closures

Organisers say roads will start closing at 05:00 BST on race day, and will be reopened in stages as runners pass through. Most routes are expected to be fully reopened by mid-afternoon.

Key closures include:

  • Bishops Road from 05:00 to about 15:30 BST
  • A15 Bourges Boulevard southbound (Queensgate roundabout to Rivergate roundabout) - closed until about 14:15 BST
  • Priestgate and Cathedral Square closed from 08:30 BST

Some roads around Werrington and Paston, and Central Park, will also be affected from 10:00 BST.

During the race, city centre car parks will be closed, including Riverside Car Park and Bishops Road Car Park. However, the Queensgate car parks will remain open.
