County to get thousands of new EV charging points
PA MediaMore than 5,500 electric vehicle charge points are set to be installed across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has secured £5.4m from the government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund to provide charging infrastructure for residents without driveways or off-street parking.
On 1 October, Peterborough City Council's cabinet agreed to accept £1,075,770 of LEVI funding - and award a 15-year contract to the provider Believ to deliver 1,058 charge points in the city.
In Cambridgeshire, 4,527 charge points will be delivered from the rest of the LEVI money, with the county council approving the contract in December 2025.
The two-socket chargers will be installed on residential streets, with locations identified through surveys, assessments, and community engagement, helping residents without driveways or off-street access to EV charging points.
Paul Bristow, the mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: "If you've got a driveway, charging an electric car is more straightforward. If you haven't, it's been a real barrier, so this funding will help put EV charging within reach for more people.
"I look forward to seeing delivery on the ground, helping our drivers and supporting my work to get Cambridgeshire and Peterborough moving."
Angus Ellis, Peterborough's cabinet member for environment, said: "This is a significant chance to accelerate our city's transition to cleaner, greener transport whilst improving access to EV charging for residents who do not have off-street parking."
Alex Beckett, chair of the highways and transport committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "Limited access to a charging point prevents many people, who still need access to a car, from switching to an EV.
"Installing more than 4,500 new EV charging points, especially in residential areas without off-street parking, is going to be a game-changer."
