Plans to allow sporting events, live music and late night alcohol sales on part of a former showground site are being considered by councillors.

Peterborough Arena, based at the former East of England Showground, is being considered for a new premises licence.

The application would allow a range of entertainment including boxing, indoor sporting events, live music and plays, and alcohol sales until 02:00.

A report to Peterborough City Council's licensing sub-committee said 14 objections had been raised, with concerns focusing on noise, public nuisance and safety, with one representation in support.

The site previously operated under a premises licence for about 20 years before it was surrendered in February 2025.

The report said: "The principal issues identified include the potential for noise disturbance arising from events and the proposed hours for the sale of alcohol and late-night refreshment."

It said there was a "history of noise complaints" associated with the premises.

The East of England Showground was home to the Peterborough Panthers speedway team and major events including Truckfest until redevelopment was proposed.

There have been plans to build 1,500 homes on the 165-acre (67-hectare) land alongside a hotel, care home and leisure facilities, but developers have so far been unable to get approval for the whole site.

The report said no objections to the licence had been received from authorities including Cambridgeshire Police, environmental health officers, the fire service, public health officials nor planning officers.

A licensing sub-committee will decide whether to grant the application, impose additional conditions or refuse the licence.
