People are being urged to share their views on plans to create a new "garden village" on the site of a former airfield near York.

A consultation on plans for Langwith Village, which would see almost 3,400 homes built at the former Elvington Airfield, near the Yorkshire Air Museum, is due to get under way next week.

The settlement would feature new schools, shops, community and leisure facilities, workplaces and active travel infrastructure, according to developers.

Chris Procter, of the Langwith Development Partnership, said the consultation "invites local residents, businesses and community organisations to help shape the next stage of the proposals for Langwith Village".

Consultation materials will be available on the development's website between 19 October and 30 November, while an in-person event is set to be held at the Yorkshire Air Museum's Halifax Suite on 20 October.

The site of the proposed village is included in City of York Council's Local Plan, which sets out where development is due to take place in the coming years.

Council officials are currently working on updating the Local Plan following national planning policy changes, with a call for sites open until December.

'Shape the future'

The masterplan for the new Langwith Village, featuring 3,339 homes, has been drawn up following engagement with stakeholders and the local community.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the Langwith Development Partnership has worked with the council and Homes England on the plans.

People have been asked to share their views so they could be taken into account before the plans were finalised and submitted.

Procter said: "After a period of sustained engagement with key stakeholders and community representatives, we are pleased to be launching this public consultation and inviting local residents, businesses and community organisations to help shape the next stage of the proposals for Langwith Village.

"The masterplan has been informed by a wide-ranging programme of technical assessment, alongside a series of consultation and design workshops, which have helped us better understand the priorities and aspirations of local communities and stakeholders."

He added that the consultation was an opportunity for people to "review the emerging proposals, understand how earlier feedback has influenced the masterplan and help shape the future of the Langwith Village ahead of the submission of an outline planning application".
