Lion recovering 'well' following eye operation
An Asiatic lion is making a full recovery after successfully undergoing a specialist operation.
Ten-year-old Sahee, who weighs 167kg (368lb), had a procedure to correct an eyelid that had been continuously rubbing against the surface of his eye, scratching the cornea.
Hertfordshire Zoo used the "extremely rare" opportunity last week to also carry out a comprehensive health check, which included taking blood samples and swabs to avoid the need for future anaesthesia.
Dr David Williams, a specialist veterinary ophthalmologist from the University of Cambridge, who carried out the operation, said: "This was a fairly simple procedure; the only difficulty was doing it on a lion, and not your regular moggy".
