Police have appealed for witnesses after a crash on the A1 involving two cars and a van seriously injured two people.

Nottinghamshire Police said it was called to reports of the crash on the A1 southbound, at the junction with the Great North Road near Fernwood, shortly after 17:00 BST on Sunday.

The force said two people, who were initially trapped in a car, were taken to hospital with serious injuries - while a pregnant woman in another car was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police added four others were uninjured in the crash and no arrests had yet been made.

The road later reopened at about 23:15.

Insp Matt Ward said: "This incident happened in the late afternoon on a busy road, and it is likely to have been witnessed by several people.

"If you have not already done so, please come forward with any information or footage of crash, no matter how insignificant you may think it is.

"I would also like to express my thanks to the public for their patience during this incident. We understand that being stuck at standstill for almost six hours is a significant inconvenience.

"Officers were working as quickly as possible to treat the injured, carry out investigation work and to clear the carriageway, including a large oil spill, before we could get everyone moving again on their journey."
