Station expected to see record number of passengers

A record number of passengers are expected to travel through Leeds Railway Station over the bank holiday weekend, as a major music festival gets into full swing.

Northern said more than 113,000 people - a 5% increase from the year before - used the city-centre hub over the same weekend last year and it expected that figure to be surpassed this year.

Leeds Festival starts later with Kasabian headlining, and 90,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event.

A spokesperson for Northern said: "We will be working hard to keep services running smoothly so we can get thousands of customers where they need to go."

The operator said that while the "vast majority" of train services would be running as normal, they would be busier than usual and passengers should allow more time for their journeys.

Northern said it was deploying extra staff this weekend and they would be wearing yellow vests to make them easier to spot for anyone needing support, directions or advice.

Meanwhile, engineering works will affect some services in Yorkshire over the weekend.

Trains running between Selby and York will be diverted via an alternative route and will not call at Sherburn-in-Elmet, Church Fenton and Ulleskelf.

There will be no trains between York and Sheffield and services will be altered between Hull, Halifax and Leeds.

Buses will be provided between Selby and York, York and Moorthorpe, and Selby and Micklefield.
