A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in her 70s.

Avon and Somerset Police said emergency services were called to a property on Sherbourne Avenue in Bradley Stoke, near Bristol, at around 14:00 BST.

The victim was found with serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A man, also in his 70s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder, police said.

Supt Karen Corrigan said: "This will come as a great shock to the community, but we do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public."

She said the investigation was in its early stages and the arrested man remains in police custody "while we seek to gain an understanding of this tragic incident".

"We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the woman's grieving family at what will be a devastating time for them, and specially trained officers will provide them with ongoing support," she said.

More police officers will be in the area while enquiries continue, and they will also provide reassurance to the public, she added.

Police are urging anyone with information which could assist their investigation to come forward, quoting reference number 5226289700.
