A 16-year-old girl has died after being fatally injured in what police believe was a hit-and-run.

The teenager was found seriously injured near a bus stop on Rook's Nest Road in Wakefield at about 20:30 BST on Tuesday and was taken to hospital. She died on Saturday, officers confirmed.

West Yorkshire Police said a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in the early hours and remained in custody.

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to contact police.

Temporary Det Ch Insp Elly Buchanan of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: "Our thoughts remain with the girl's family, and we are supporting them at this horrendous time.

"Through our investigation we now believe that she was the victim of a road traffic collision, where the vehicle failed to stop at the scene, however our investigation remains ongoing.

"We are continuing to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to come forward and speak with us."
