Elderly man and woman killed in rural crash

A man in his nineties and a woman in her seventies have been killed in a crash in North Yorkshire, according to police.

The pair died in the crash on the A171 between Whitby and Guisborough on Friday at about 23:45 BST.

North Yorkshire Police said a grey Peugeot 2008 and a blue VW Golf collided near Scaling Dam as the Peugeot travelled east and the VW travelled west.

The passenger of the Peugeot, a woman in her seventies, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, a man in his nineties, was taken to hospital, but died later as a result of his injuries.

A man in his twenties and a teenager were taken to hospital for treatment, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening, police said.

The force said inquiries were ongoing and urged anyone with relevant dashcam footage or who may have seen the collision to get in touch.
