A school has delayed opening and a road has been closed as emergency services deal with a house fire in South Yorkshire.

Six fire engines attended the blaze on Dalton Lane, in the Dalton area of Rotherham, with the road closed from the junction with Hardwick Street to Creswick Road.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service also said there was reduced access to nearby Trinity Croft Church of England Primary Academy. It said access was "only possible via the East Herringthorpe side of Dalton Lane".

The fire service added: "If you live nearby please make sure you keep your windows and doors closed."

The school, which the fire service said could not be accessed from the Doncaster Road side, delayed opening until 10:30 BST.

In a statement, the school said: "Our caretaker has spoken directly with the fire officer, who has advised us to delay opening due to the smoke in the area."

South Yorkshire Police advised motorists to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
