St Albans homes shut after complaints of cuckooing

Three homes in and around St Albans have been closed following complaints of drug dealing, cuckooing and other illegal activity.

St Albans City and District Council secured the closure orders which prevent anybody from entering the properties without formal permission.

The council's anti-social behaviour team took action after complaints about a property in Bardwell Court and two flats in Cottonmill Lane and Springfield Road.

Liberal Democrat councillor Sarwar Shamsher said: "We will now work with these vulnerable tenants and our partners to help them rebuild their lives and reduce the risk of them being exploited again."

The council said the first property was linked to drug dealing, excessive noise and other anti-social behaviour.

The flats were were closed after reports of cuckooing, which is when criminals use a vulnerable person's property as a hub for drug dealing and other illegal activities.

Shamsher added: "Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home and neighbourhood, and we remain determined to protect vulnerable residents and tackle criminal activity."
