A seaside resort's pleasure pier has been temporarily closed while repairs are carried out.

Dorset Council said the structure in Weymouth needed to undergo surfacing works along its wall, while steps down to the beach are refurbished and new handrails finished off.

The council said: "Thank you for your understanding and cooperation while these essential improvement works are carried out."

The pier would remain shut for two weeks from Monday. The beach access steps are due to reopen before the town's annual triathlon event, Ironman 70.3, on Sunday 20 September.
