A student from London whose body was recovered from a lake below Wales' highest peak died after drowning, an inquest opening has been told.

Mahammed Naim Islam, 20, had walked to a lake called Llyn Glaslyn, in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, with his brother on 26 September.

The lake sits below the summit of Yr Wyddfa - Snowdon - on the popular Pyg Track route up the mountain.

Caernarfon Coroner's Court heard that Islam entered the water and "got into difficulties".

A call was made to emergency services at about 19:00 BST, with a team from Llanberis Mountain Rescue attending and carrying out an initial search.

An underwater search team returned the following day, when the man's body was recovered from the water.

Senior coroner Kate Robertson said a post-mortem examination gave an initial cause of death as drowning.

The inquest was adjourned pending further investigations.

In a tribute to the student, his family said he was a "bright and remarkable young man" with a promising future ahead of him.

The family's statement added: "He will be remembered for the joy he brought to others, the memories he created and the positive impact he had on those fortunate enough to cross his path."
