Bus users are being reminded that temporary stops will be in place during renovation work at a city's busiest transport hub.

Cumberland Council is installing new paving, street furniture and lighting columns in Market Hall bus hub in Carlisle during the first phase of the work from 1 September, which is expected to last about three months.

During this time temporary stops will be installed on Drovers Lane, Lowther Street and the Howard Arms pub.

The council apologised for any short-term disruption caused by the work which it said would complement the wider regeneration taking place across the city centre.

The second phase of work, expected to start in early January will focus on refurbishing the existing bus shelters, including new roofs, LED lighting and redecoration.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council's executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: "Carlisle Market Hall and surrounding businesses will remain open throughout the project, and we would encourage residents and visitors to continue supporting local traders while the works are taking place.

"We recognise these improvements will cause some short-term disruption and would like to thank people in advance for their patience and understanding."
