A man's death in the River Severn has been referred to the police watchdog after it is believed police officers had contact with him in the days beforehand.

The emergency services were called to the river near Worcester Rowing Club at about 08:50 BST on Saturday.

Officers located the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said formal identification had not yet taken place, adding the force believed officers had contact with the man in the days before his death.

As a result, the case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the body that oversees complaints and serious incidents involving police forces in England and Wales.
