Firefighters tackled a blaze at a former library as police urged residents to keep away from the area.

Cleveland Police said it was called to assist the fire service at Billingham's former library, at the back of Billingham Health Centre, in Queensway, on Tuesday evening.

Photographs of the scene showed a building well alight as fire crews worked to keep it under control. No further details were released.

The force advised residents living nearby to keep doors and windows closed. Road closures at Causeway and Kingsway were partially lifted in the early hours of the morning, with Causeway remaining closed between Finchale Avenue and Kingsway Roundabout.
