Four children and three adults have escaped injury in two separate shootings in Coleraine in the early hours of Monday.

The PSNI are treating both gun attacks as attempted murder.

Police said they received a report at about 00:10 BST that a number of shots had been fired at a house on Maythorn Avenue.

While dealing with this, officers then received a further report that shots had also been fired at a property on Silverthorn Avenue at about 00:30.

PSNI Det Insp Hanbidge said "five people, including three children, were present" at the property on Maythorn Avenue.

A three-year-old child was in bed at the time of the shooting.

"They, along with the other children and adults present in the house, could have been seriously injured as a result of this attack," Hanbridge said.

The house on Maythorn Avenue belongs to Dan Grundle, an activist with the anti-immigration group Our Northern Ireland Voice.

In April the group organised a rally in Coleraine addressing "immigration concerns and protecting women and children".

'Could have ended very differently'

An adult and a child were inside the home which was attacked on Silverthorn Avenue.

Hanbridge said: "Again, thankfully no injuries were reported, however, this could also have ended very differently."

The man who lives in the house on Silverthorn wanted to remain anonymous, but told the BBC he could not understand why his home had been shot at.

Police have appealed to anyone who has any information relevant to their investigation to contact them.
