Man who rammed police car with BMW jailed
West Yorkshire PoliceA man who rammed a police car after being pulled over by officers has been jailed for dangerous driving.
Karam Tofeek, 24, was stopped in Huddersfield on suspicion of driving without insurance on 23 July.
But he refused to turn off the car's engine and proceeded to ram into the police car parked in front of him, while two officers were still inside, causing £6,000 of damage.
On Monday, Tofeek, of Leaventhorpe Lane, Bradford, was jailed at Leeds Crown Court for one year and nine months, disqualified from driving for three years and seven months and given a £187 fine.
West Yorkshire Police said Tofeek had driving a grey BMW X5 along Leeds Road in Bradley when he was stopped by officers.
After pulling his car to the side of the road, Tofeek refused to turn off the engine and rammed into the police car in front of him. Neither of the officers inside were injured.
Tofeek was arrested and found guilty on 16 September after a trial.
Sgt Andrew Johnson said the officers had been put in an "extremely dangerous situation".
"Our officers continue to show bravery and professionalism when dealing with dangerous and unpredictable situations, while protecting the communities they serve," he said.
"We welcome the sentence, which reflects the seriousness of this reckless behaviour and hope it sends a clear message that putting officers and other road users at risk will not be tolerated."
