Firefighter to help Ukraine's 'suffering' crews

A firefighter heading to Ukraine next week to deliver vital equipment has said fire crews there are "suffering immensely".

Chris Standley, a watch manager with Norfolk Fire Service, is one of four volunteers taking two fire engines that are being donated to the country.

Working with the charity Actions Beyond Words, the volunteers have filled the vehicles with life-saving kit.

"We've been through a very busy phase here in Norfolk and in the eastern region just recently, but it's nothing compared to what those guys are going through on a daily basis," said Standley.

He added: "They are working their socks off with old equipment and they're suffering immensely."

The retired fire engines, which used to respond to emergencies in Hampshire, were bought for £4,000 each.

On Saturday, volunteers raised more money with the help of the Rotary Club of Diss and District. Donations will also cover the costs of diesel and other travel expenses.

Standley said: "We look to spend around £16,000 to £17,000 per trip for two fire engines to Ukraine full of medical aid."

He said the charity had already sent aid to Kharkiv and Odesa.

He also said the crews in Ukraine were suffering from the stress of what they were doing and seeing.

"I know there are projects going in Ukraine through different aid agencies to recognise and support the mental health aspects of being a firefighter," he added.

The volunteers are expected to head to Ukraine on Thursday.
