Thousands without power as Storm Boelo hits region
Peter WalkerThousands of homes are without power, with Storm Boelo bringing widespread disruption across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire this weekend.
By 14:30 GMT, 13,943 properties in the two areas had been affected, with 5,757 still without electricity, said Northern Powergrid.
A yellow wind warning remains in place until 21:00 GMT on Sunday.
Some roads were closed due to toppled trees, according to Humberside Police.
A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said: "Strong winds and heavy rain have caused damage to the electricity network, with conditions forecast to persist throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
"Our teams are working to assess the damage and restore supplies wherever it is safe to do so. However, the severe weather continues to affect both our ability to assess the network and carry out repairs safely."
Frank SlaterThe company said it would begin restoring power to customers as the wind subsides later, but warned customers could remain without electricity overnight.
The spokesperson added: "We advise those customers for whom being without power tonight is a significant problem to err on the side of caution and consider seeking alternative accommodation."
Humberside Police said the A1034 was closed between Sancton and South Cave in East Yorkshire due to a fallen tree.
In the East Riding of Yorkshire, motorists were advised to avoid the A165 between Carnaby and Bessingby in Bridlington because of a fallen tree.
In Hull, a large tree fell on a car travelling on Beverley Road. No one is believed to have been injured, but the BBC has contacted police for confirmation.
In Lincolnshire, trees and branches also came down on a campsite in Kirkby on Bain, near Woodhall Spa, and a road in a residential area of Eastoft in the Isle of Axholme.
'Avoid travelling'
There is also major disruption on the railways, with trains between Scarborough, Bridlington and Hull affected, according to Northern Rail.
Trains between Sheffield and Lincoln are also subject to delays or cancellations.
A Northern spokesperson said: "Given the extent of disruption caused by Storm Boelo today we are strongly recommending people avoid travelling.
"Colleagues are working around the clock to reinstate services as quickly as possible, however with weather conditions quickly changing, customers are advised to check our website or National Rail Enquiries for the latest information including for travel plans tomorrow."
Customers can use tickets from Sunday to travel on Monday or Tuesday instead, the spokesperson added.
A number of flights have also been cancelled, including more than 20 from Leeds Bradford.
The unsettled weather is set to continue into the start of the week, although conditions should be less severe than those seen across the country since Friday.
However, the weather looks set to improve later this week, with drier and calmer weather offering a respite from the recent run of storms.
