Hockey player first to represent England at 90

The first England hockey player to still be playing at international level at 90 says "age does not matter" when it comes to enjoying sport.

Bill Greenwood, who lives near Langport, in Somerset, has been playing field hockey since the mid-1960s.

Earlier this month, he represented England Over 80s at the World Cup in the Netherlands and still plays and coaches for Yeovil and Sherborne hockey club.

Greenwood said: "It was fantastic, it's the sort of thing you dream about and certainly when I started playing I didn't think I would be playing at this age, I probably thought I would be dead."

He said that he likes the game and the company.

"It's a challenge, and it's good fun," he said.

"The rest of the team are a great bunch of lads. They're good companions, and we've played together for some time now; we've played our opponents for some time now so we all know each other."

Greenwood said "age doesn't really matter".

"I don't see why they should get worried about me. I choose to play, and I enjoy playing. If anything happens to me, so be it," he added.

"Things do happen. I got a stick in the face a couple of years ago; I've had broken fingers, but that's not deliberate. You get injuries in any game."

He said that while he is currently the country's first 90-year-old still playing international hockey, one of his teammates is celebrating his 90th birthday on 12 September.

"He will be 90 then, and then the next one comes up next April, and so it goes," Greenwood said.
