The charity has asked people to keep donating baby hats and other items for children in Ukraine

A charity which sends knitted baby items to Ukraine has packed its 64,633rd donated item, the equivalent of one donation for every person living on Guernsey.

The Newborn Baby Hats Appeal reached the milestone on 3 October, marking what organisers described as a historic moment for the volunteer-led project.

The charity said data from Statistics Times showed there were 64,633 people on the island.

"Only a close-knit community could achieve something so monumental," the charity said.

The charity first sent items for families or pregnant woman fleeing the country, shortly after the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022. Items included baby hats, blankets, vests and comforters.

It said its charitable work continued and asked people to continue donating items such as new toys, blankets, jackets, cardigans, hats and socks for Ukrainian children up to the age of five.

Its Christmas shipment would accept donations until 24 October and the charity urged people to include a Christmas card with a message for a family in the Ukraine.
