Police and rescue teams are searching a river for a man who went missing after spending the night with friends.

Liam, 22, was last seen heading towards Wylam, in Northumberland, from Wylam Bridge at about 00:20 BST on Saturday, Northumbria Police said.

The force believes he has entered the water.

Mountain rescue teams are helping police with their search of the River Tyne and the surrounding Wylam area.

Police said before Liam's last known sighting, they received a report of a disturbance at a nearby premises and a subsequent crash on Wylam Bridge involving a vehicle and a group of pedestrians.

A man and woman, both in their 20s, were seriously injured in the crash.

Officers said Liam was on the bridge at the time of the collision but he was not in the vehicle, nor was he believed to have been injured.

Two men, aged 22 and 23, have been arrested in connection with the report and both have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Sarah Robson said the force could not say how long it would be searching the area.

"We will continue to support his family, and we would ask the public to avoid speculation both online and in the community," she said.

"We would like to thank our colleagues from North of Tyne Mountain and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue teams for their continued support and all those who have helped with the searches so far."

Liam's family are being supported by officers.
