Passengers face rail disruption for track replacements

Rail passengers are expected to face weekend disruption due to maintenance work between Norwich and Ipswich.

The work will be carried out on weekends in September and October and will affect routes through Norfolk and Suffolk, including the East Suffolk line and Felixstowe branch line.

Network Rail said the work can only be carried out when trains are not running and rail replacement buses for Greater Anglia services will operate instead.

Martin Beable, chief operating officer for Great British Railways (GBR) Anglia, said: "These works will help us keep running a safe and reliable service on these busy routes for years to come."

Engineers will replace the track and enhance the crossing surface at the level crossing on High Green Road near Great Moulton in Norfolk to give passengers and road users a smoother ride.

The road will be closed at the level crossing and a diversion route will be in place.

Between Stowmarket and Diss 0.9 miles (1.5km) of old railway line, which has been in place for the last 50 years, will be replaced.

Extensive maintenance including replacing old ballast, sleepers and rails will be carried out around Ipswich station.

Passengers have been advised to check before they travel on the affected weekends.

Beable said: "We're sorry for the disruption but we need access to the track to get these vital jobs done."
