The RSPCA is appealing for information after a cat was found dead inside a bin bag.

The ginger and white tom was discovered outside a garage in Hilda Street, Grimsby, at about 14:00 BST on 27 September.

He was soaking wet and vets at Grimsby Animal Hospital who examined him believe he may have drowned or been involved in a water-related accident.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Mollie Masters said: "We believe the circumstances surrounding the discovery of this poor cat's body are suspicious and we're appealing to anyone who may be able to help [with] our inquiries to come forward."

The cat, believed to have been aged between four and five, was not microchipped and was not wearing a collar.

The hospital said it was unusual for his entire body to be soaking wet, particularly as there had been no rain on the day he was found or the day before.

The charity said the cat has a small healed wound on the right side of his head, along with slight bruising to his gums and left cheek.

The RSPCA has carried out inquiries and is appealing for anyone with information about the cat or the circumstances surrounding his death to get in touch.

Masters said neither the person who found the cat nor nearby residents recognised the animal.

"The finder was understandably extremely upset and we'd like to thank them for their concern and taking the action they did."
