Permit scheme could be introduced on city streets
GoogleA parking permit scheme could be introduced on some residential streets in Leicester following complaints commuters and workers are taking up on-street spaces.
Residents are currently being asked for their views on the proposal for seven streets off Tudor Road, in West End, which would affect about 460 homes and businesses.
The streets that would be included in the scheme are Clifford Street, Kate Street, Rivers Street, Battenberg Road, Empire Road, Mantel Road, and Paget Road.
An online survey will run until 17 November, with a public drop-in event being held at Woodgate Community Centre next Thursday.
Under the plans, households would be required to pay £35 a year for each vehicle, while visitor permits would cost either £40 for a year or £2 for 24 hours. The visitor passes would need to be purchased by a resident.
Businesses would pay £100 for a non-transferable permit or £150 for a permit that can be transferred between vehicles.
Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport at the city council, said parking schemes elsewhere had been effective at freeing up spaces for residents.
"We're now looking at rolling these schemes out to other neighbourhoods across the city where residents tell us they are needed," he said.
After the survey, if the council gives the go-ahead, a formal consultation as part of the statutory traffic regulation order process will be carried out.
