Twin Atlantic have cancelled their UK tour just days after releasing a new album.

The alternative rock band, which was formed in Glasgow in 2007 and whose best-known songs include Heart and Soul and Free, were due to play gigs in their home city as well as Dundee, Leeds and Birmingham.

Separation From the Animals, their eighth album, was released on Friday.

Twin Atlantic said they were "immensely proud" of the album, but added that making the record had been "intense" and taken its toll on the band's members.

The band's members include Ross McNae, Barry McKenna, Craig Kneale and Sam McTrusty, who lives with his family in Canada.

In a statement, Twin Atlantic said they arrived at a "point of reflection" while making the album.

"Making this record has been one of the band's greatest gifts as it brought us all back into recording studios together again after many years apart," they said.

"However, diving into some of the subject matter on this album and self-producing it with the intense passion that we approached it with has taken its toll on us in a personal way that we haven't experienced before.

"Rather than ignoring the signals here, we are making the very difficult decision to take some time to pause and therefore cancelling our upcoming UK tour."

'Time at home'

The band said they wanted to express their regret at not being able to ahead with the shows.

"We hope that being able to spend time at home and around our families, which was a huge source of inspiration for this chapter of our band's music, will allow us to come back and make up for this cancellation at some point," they added.

Twin Atlantic have had two albums in the UK top 10 and five in the top 40.

They have performed at Glasgow's TRNSMT festival and Belladrum in the Highlands.
