Murder arrest over British tourist's Greece death
Getty ImagesA man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a British woman who died in Greece earlier this year, an inquest opening has heard.
Jacqueline Causton was found unresponsive at her villa on the island of Zakynthos on 14 May, Doncaster Coroner's Court heard.
She was taken to a local hospital on the island, also known as Zante, but later pronounced dead and her body was subsequently repatriated.
Det Con Mike Tilley, of South Yorkshire Police, told the court a man had been arrested on 12 June on suspicion of murder, before being bailed and then re-arrested last weekend when "fresh evidence" emerged.
After the hearing, the force said the suspect was aged 69 and had been arrested in Worcestershire.
The officer said the police's probe into the case was "complex" as investigation material uncovered by the Greek authorities was "still held" in the country and that some potential witnesses were foreign nationals.
He said there was "likely to be some further pathological work" required and that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was yet to decide whether or not Greek or British authorities would lead the investigation.
The hearing was not told how the 66-year-old, from Bawtry in South Yorkshire, may have died.
Offering her condolences to the family, area coroner Louise Slater said the case would return to court in February 2027 for an update.
In June, Doncaster Mind paid tribute, describing Jacqueline as a "much-loved supporter" of the mental health charity.
It said she and her late husband had "brought so much joy to our community by transforming their home in Bawtry into a magical Christmas wonderland each year".
A spokesperson for the charity added: "Their kindness, generosity and community spirit touched countless lives, and we will always be grateful for everything they did to help us continue our work."
