A man has been charged with murder following a fatal collision on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire.

A 22-year-old woman, from Newcastle, died when a silver Ford Transit and a silver Volkswagen Golf collided on the southbound carriageway on Sunday, in the Barton area, north of Scotch Corner.

North Yorkshire Police said Florin Chirac, of Hampstead Road, Newcastle, had been charged with murder, attempted grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving in relation to the crash.

The 31-year-old appeared at York Magistrates' Court earlier where he was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Friday.

A 23-year-old man, from Grimsby, who was also arrested in connection with the collision, has been released with no further action.

The force has not yet released details of who was travelling in which vehicle.

They said the family of the woman, who has not been named, were receiving support from specially trained officers.

Appealing for witnesses, a police spokesperson said: "If you saw the collision and have not yet spoken to police, please get in touch. Even the smallest detail could prove significant to our inquiries.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle in the moments leading up to the collision.

"In particular, we would like to speak to drivers who may have dashcam footage showing either vehicle before the collision, or footage of the collision itself."
