Arson arrests after fire in derelict building

Three people have been arrested after a fire at a derelict building in Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire Police said officers were called to Newcastle Street, in Burslem, at about 14:40 BST on Friday.

Newcastle Street has been closed between Blake Street and Woodbank Street as crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service work to extinguish the blaze.

A 42-year-old woman of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, while a 38-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent and a 42-year-old man of no fixed address were arrested on suspicion of attempted arson with intent to endanger life.

All three were taken into custody for questioning.

Fire engines and police vehicles filled the street as thick smoke poured from the building.

Despite the surrounding area being cordoned off, people gathered nearby to watch emergency services at work.
