The centre is expected to include clinical, training and research facilities

Plans for a medical centre in Peterborough with 26 treatment rooms and student accommodation have been approved.

It will be built on land at Silver Hill in the Hampton area of Peterborough.

The planning application said the Hampton Medical Centre would provide clinical, training and research facilities.

The centre, next to the Serpentine Green shopping area, is expected to create about 40 jobs, as the Peterborough Telegraph first reported.

It will treat day patients only, with no overnight stays.

The application said the facility was needed because the rising population in the area was putting increased pressure on the GP surgery.

As a condition of the approval, Peterborough City Council said construction must begin within three years.
