'Near miss' in harbour after boat runs red light

A "near miss" between a passenger ship and a cruise ship tender took place last weekend, Guernsey Ports has said.

Harbour master James Way said a tender had departed despite red signals being in place on Sunday at about 17:00 BST.

Tender 14 from the cruise ship AIDAsol crossed in front of the San Pawl ferry, which carries up to 310 foot passengers between Guernsey and Jersey.

Way said while the boats had passed each other "at relatively close range", there had been "no immediate danger or impact on passenger or vessel safety" and the incident has been discussed with the cruise operator.

He added: "Cruise tender skippers are briefed at the start of each day by Guernsey Ports staff on local procedures, harbour signals and traffic management arrangements before commencing operations.

"Maritime safety matters are always taken seriously and local traffic management procedures will continue to be reinforced with all operators ahead of future operations."
