A man in his 70s has died in a light aircraft crash near Guildford.

Surrey Police said the man - who was piloting the aircraft - was pronounced dead on the scene, following the crash in a field in Worplesdon shortly after 15:30 BST on Tuesday.

The force said there was a "large emergency services" response in the area, close to Worplesdon Road.

This involved firefighters and ambulance crews, it added.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said it had launched an investigation into the incident.

"A multidisciplinary team of inspectors has visited the accident site to gather evidence," a spokesperson said.

"The aircraft has been transported back to the AAIB's headquarters in Farnborough for further analysis."

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, which sent two fire engines to the scene, said its thoughts were with the man's loved ones at this "incredibly difficult time".

"There were no other casualties," it said.

Firefighters left the incident just before 17:00 on the same day, the fire service said.
