A man stuck in up to his knees in mud on the banks of a tidal river had to be rescued as rising waters almost engulfed him.

Coastguards were called to the incident at the River Alt close to Blundellsands Sailing Club in Sefton, Merseyside, on Sunday.

HM Coastguard Crosby said the terrain near the sailing club and river is "difficult to work in even in ideal conditions, never mind with a flooding tide quickly approaching the casualty".

With the help of the fire service, crews entered the mud and managed to free him.

He was assessed by paramedics and "luckily didn't require any further medical treatment", coastguards added.
