Revised race schedule means extra roads closures

Roads on the Isle of Man will remain closed for most of Monday to accommodate a major overhaul of the Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix race schedule.

The 37.7 mile (61km) Mountain Course closed at 09:30 BST and will remain shut until 16:30. It will then close again from 18:00 until no later than 21:00.

The additional evening closure comes after organisers brought the entire race programme forward due to a forecast of rain from Wednesday.

The overhaul is set to see the event conclude on Tuesday rather than Friday.

The morning's opening race, the Junior Manx Grand Prix, was red flagged on the final lap, leading to the following race being pushed back slightly.

Organisers said Ireland's Liam Chawke, who crashed at the Black Dub, had suffered leg injuries.

Described as being conscious and talking, he was taken to Noble's Hospital for treatment.

The Manx Grand Prix (MGP) and Classic TT run in parallel on the Mountain Course every August.

Qualifying for both events this year has faced significant disruption due to inclement weather and red flag incidents.

The overhaul of the 10-race schedule has seen the four MGP and six Classic TT races scheduled to run over four consecutive days from Saturday to Tuesday.

The original race programme had rest days factored in, with Tuesday and Thursday earmarked as contingency periods.

The change is designed to allow five Classic TT races - originally scheduled for Wednesday and Friday but at risk of cancellation due to the incoming rain - to take place.

Tuesday's schedule is set to include a classic sidecar parade lap, as well as a parade marking 30 years of motorcycling legend John McGuinness racing on the Isle of Man.
