Sutton Bank will be closed for three weeks while essential safety and maintenance work is carried out, North Yorkshire Council has said.

The steep route, which forms part of the A170, will close for annual maintenance from 07:00 BST 13 September.

It is due to be completed by 19:00 on 4 October.

A spokesperson for the authority said: "The works will include planned maintenance to the rock face and routine maintenance of the road."

They added that the maintenance will be taking longer than usual to allow for "further drainage and repairs".

Executive member for highways and transport, Malcom Taylor, said the work was part of a wider three-year-plan to "enhance the resilience and long-term condition of Sutton Bank".

Alyson Baker, who represents Hillside and Raskelf, said: "We will do everything possible to minimise disruption and would like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation while the work is carried out.

"Access to homes will be maintained whenever possible, but the nature of the work means there could be times when access is restricted."

A signed diversion will be in place during the maintenance, with more details available on North Yorkshire Council's website.
