Hull City player crashes spark road review call
Jessica LaneA councillor is calling for an urgent safety review of a section of road near Hull City's training ground after two crashes in three weeks involving the club's players.
Lucas Gourna-Douath, 23, crashed on Millhouse Woods Lane in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, on Thursday. Sorba Thomas had previously crashed his car on the same road in September.
Councillor Phil Redshaw said the incidents should serve as a "wake-up call". He said: "We've got to recognise that something has to be done."
East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it would continue to monitor the location and consider any information provided by the police or other parties as part of its ongoing review of the region's roads.
Hull City said no one was hurt in the latest incident on Thursday, which came 20 days after Thomas's Land Rover overturned in a similar spot.
Redshaw said he had written a letter to the council to identify the likely cause and ask what immediate measures could be implemented to reduce the risk of a further incident.
He added: "I think we can't just write it off as two unfortunate incidents. We've not had incidents as bad as this, but we've had a lot of incidents and near misses along there for some years."
Harry ShakespeareRedshaw cited issues such as the road being narrow, vehicles being parked along one side and heavy traffic in the area. He said he also believed the speed restriction needed to be reviewed.
"There's not been a recorded history of accidents, according to the council, down there, to warrant anything.
"But I think if you ask any resident down there, virtually everybody has had a near miss of one sort or another, even myself," he said.
In a statement, the council said although Millhouse Woods Lane was a narrow rural road it was of sufficient width to accommodate traffic safely.
"As with all roads, motorists are expected to travel at a speed suitable for the conditions and position their vehicles appropriately.
"We are not currently aware of any highway maintenance defects or road condition issues at this location that would prevent road users from travelling along the route safely when exercising due care and attention," the authority said.
