A surge in antisocial behaviour, including theft, arson and public defecation, has prompted police to impose a dispersal order.

Wiltshire Police says it has received reports of "repeated antisocial behaviour" from youths in Melksham town centre and the nearby King George V Park in recent days.

As a result, officers have been given the power to temporarily exclude anyone suspected of engaging in antisocial behaviour or disorder from the designated area.

Neighbourhood Sgt Charly Chilton said the order will remain in place for an initial 48 hours, during which time anyone found at fault "will be dealt with swiftly and robustly".

Police said the reports of antisocial behaviour include alcohol use, entering derelict buildings and defecation in public, alongside theft and arson in the skate park.

"The recent increase in antisocial behaviour is completely unacceptable," Chilton said.

"Members of the public shouldn't have to put up with being harassed or intimidated when simply going about their day.

"Creating and maintaining safer public spaces for all continues to be a force priority, and we will continue to work to ensure Melksham is a safe and peaceful place to live."

The Section 35 dispersal order will remain in place until 13:45 BST on Saturday.

If any individual returns to the area after being asked to leave, then they are liable to be arrested, police added.
