The areas surrounding almost 70 war memorials across Essex are due to be cleaned ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Three crews have begun tidying pathways, removing leaves and cutting back foliage in the run-up to 8 November, Essex County Council said.

Peter Harris, leader of the Reform-UK led authority, said it was about ensuring people could pay their respects "not just on Remembrance Sunday, but every day".

A total of 69 war memorials are expected to be tidied and work began on Monday.

Mark Webster, cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said they were a "special place" for many in Essex.

"As we approach Remembrance Sunday, it is right that these important sites and the spaces around them are clean, tidy and well cared for," he added.
