It is hoped that a historic boating lake which has been closed for several years will reopen next spring.

Colchester City Council said it wants to bring the lake in Castle Park back into use.

Part of the weir in the park collapsed into the river in 2023, resulting in the lake's closure.

Paul Dundas, leader of Colchester City Council, said: "There has been a lot to consider, but we have now reached the point where we can be clear about our ambition to restore it and bring it back into use."

Martin Goss, the council's portfolio holder for waste, neighbourhoods and leisure, said: "The boating lake has been part of Castle Park for generations and we know how much it means to residents and visitors."

The lake dates back to the 1800s.
