Seaside themed play area opens in city

A play area has been revamped in a scheme designed to "create an inclusive space for children to play", the council says.

Former ramps at the Medway Road site in Worcester, which was used by people on bikes, scooters and skateboards, have been replaced with a coastal-themed area designed for children of all ages and abilities.

New features include a wheelchair-accessible roundabout , ground-level trampoline, a large ship climbing structure, a seaside mural, swings, and an octopus-shaped seesaw and slides.

It was the third play area to reopen this summer after refurbishment projects, following work at Horizon Hub and Ronkswood Hub, the city council said

The Medway Road project has cost £116,900, with £100,000 funded through planning-related developer contributions and the remaining costs met by the council.

The existing toddler play area has been enclosed with railings to help keep young children safe and help prevent dogs from entering. A meeting space has been designed for older children.

The new overall design was shaped by feedback from residents in a consultation. They asked for "more inclusive and varied equipment, along with improved accessibility and safety surfacing".

The chair of the council's place and economic development committee, Adrian Gregson, said it was "continuing to invest in high-quality, inclusive play spaces across the city".
