A dispersal order covering part of Merseyside has been introduced by police following reports of teenagers throwing fireworks at vehicles.

The order, covering parts of St Helens and Rainhill, came into force at 23:30 BST on Saturday and runs until 05:00 on Monday, Merseyside Police said.

Insp Neil Taylor said: "This order is in response to reports of youths causing anti-social behaviour, including throwing fireworks at vehicles and cycling in an anti-social manner."

He said extra officers were patrolling the area to ensure those who were causing such issues were appropriately dealt with so they did not cause distress to residents in the community.

Taylor said: "This dispersal zone, along with other measures, is intended to prevent youths from gathering and causing unnecessary distress and intimidation to people who want to go about their business without fear of harm."

He urged anyone who witnessed anti-social behaviour or with any information about such incidents to contact police.

Under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, police have powers to direct people they suspect are causing, or likely to cause, crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour towards members of the public to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours.

It also gives officers the power to seize any item, including vehicles, used in the commission of anti-social behaviour.

Anyone who returns to the area after being directed to leave commits an offence and may be arrested.
